A Cozy Weekend in Copenhagen

I'm going to be honest, as I write this post (I have been procrastinating so much), I am laying in bed probably the sickest I've been in the past few years. I underestimated the toll traveling takes on your body...I never want to complain for these beautiful opportunities in my life but I definitely want you to remember that life is more than just the highlight reel of social media. But with that, let's go back to the better times when I was in Copenhagen with my best friend.

I have always loved Scandinavian design, fashion, and hygge lifestyle. When I arrived to my first Scandinavian country, the CPH airport to be exact, this infatuation turned into a full blown love affair. I loved everything about this culture. Well...everything except for how expensive everything was. But I can look past it because I was living my best life for a weekend. After spending a weekend in the cozy city of Copenhagen which oddly reminded me of Amsterdam, I already decided that I need to come back to this area (probably Stockholm) once it's warm to get a better feel for it ;)

My best friend and I stayed at the Copenhagen Downtown Hostel which I highly recommend to anyone staying in Copenhagen for the weekend. Not only was the hostel in a fantastic location but it had one of the best loungy/bar areas to hangout and meet people :) This was one of the highlights of my trip. Also, I got to see one of my best friends from high school and another friend from college while in Cope...so that was fun too.

As far as food goes, Copenhagen has a lot of good food. I originally wanted to study abroad here just because I had heard of so many good restaurants that were in Copenhagen. Noma, one of the best restaurants in the world, just reopened (unfortunately I did not go...def not in my budget) but I did get the chance to eat at some really good restaurants.

Food Hall/Markets

  1. Tivoli Food Hall – Many people know the "Tivoli" name because of the famous Tivoli Gardens which rumor has it was the original Disneyland. Right next to the park is the food hall which is great for a quick dinner, night out with friends, or if you just can't decide what you're in the mood for. I had a burger from Copenhagen chain, Cocks & Cows, but all the food looked fantastic.
  2. Torvehallerne or Glass Market – probably one of my favorite spots I visited in Copenhagen. I got the famous porridge from GRØD but just walking around looking at the different stalls had my mouth watering. I loved this market because there were two separate buildings, one for more sit down food and the other for fresh meat and seafoods. You gotta stop here during your time in Copenhagen!
  3. Reffen Street Food – I will say this place is way out of the way and took a while to get to but it was worth it. If you are visiting when it's warm outside, I'd def make a stop here but on a cold night this is not the best place because it's practically all outdoors. The concepts of Reffen is basically this mini food village made of shipping containers with little stalls and food trucks of different types of food from all around the world. I had North African food, Mexican, and Icelandic Cheesecake...yum!
  4. The Bridge Street Market – I went here for lunch after spending some time walking through Copenhagen's hippie commune "Christiania." This market is another outdoor stall type place. They have some of Copenhagen's famous quick eateries like Gasoline Grill, GRØD, and California Grill. Again...great for a warm and sunny day...on a cold and rainy day....ehhh go somewhere indoors.

Restaurants

  1. Hija de Sanchez – if you know Noma then you know Hija de Sanchez. This place has been #1 on my list of places to try for a long while and it did not disappoint. Considering these were the first tacos I have had in the past four months, maybe that's why they tasted so good but then again, it was probably just the corn from Mexico and culinary genius behind this place.
  2. The Union Kitchen – the best brunch plate of my life. All I'm going to say is make reservations and go for brunch. It is incredible.
  3. bæst – again, another one of those places that has been on my list for the longest time ever and it didn't disappoint, they make all of their cheese by hand (they have a farm where they get the milk every morning!) and cured all the meats. The best burrata, pizza, and tiramisu I've ever had. I'm going to Italy in a couple of weeks so I'll report back with how it compares.

And that my friends, is another weekend wrapped up in just a few restaurants. I just visited Lisbon but I don't think that round up will be out until after the holidays because I am doing a bit of a ~cleanse~ from technology to get my head screwed back on straight and I want to spend time eating pasta in Italy with my parents...duh :)
